Adam and I have begun a new tradition of getting a "night off". At first I thought, "I don't need that" and then I did it and I realized I needed it. The first bargain is, no paying a babysitter.
The next great deal is that I bounce as soon as I am done with dinner. No clean up, yay!
I work from home, the kids are at daycare and I see my husband more frequently than anyone on earth because he works 3.5 feet away from me. We get date night every day.
Dates with ourselves happen once a week. He gets Thursdays and he travels to Newark to hang out at Axiom Studios, a place that he web consults for and hosts his Mixtape Sessions radio show from. You should check it out, it's a good time. Since he DJ's another radio show from our shared office on Tuesdays at 2 PM, on Thursdays I get a quiet night.Love my Adam dearly, but I also like silence.
For my night out, I get Tuesday nights. I usually head to the library. I chose this night because I would like to attend my town's council meetings. Tonight, they are off, so I headed to Barnes and Nobles to find picture books four our two year old who scored less than average on her Early Intervention test. She is perfectly wonderful and we are blessed, but I will be darned if I can't improve her score for the next time the Early Interventionists come around.
At B & N, I found a great picture book for $5.99, it has pics of all of our favorite things like clothes, items from around the house, garden and beach vocab for the little learner. I also got an ABC first words book in the bargain section for $4.98.
While there, I did some research for the juvenile fiction novel I am writing to discover that B & N did not carry what I wanted OR the Babysitters Club Series. Appalling. I would have to special order, then take the trip back out to the store to get it! Nah. There are a lot of other series like iCarly and Goosebumps, Nancy Drew didn't get slashed, but no Stacey and Claudia and the conservative one, cant remember her name.
I decided to get Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by my favorite author Judy Blume for my lovely niece to take on her summer vacation. I am sure she will love it, and if so: I will check the rest of the books from the series out of the Library for her, just like I checked out Book #1 of the great Babysitters Club, Kristy's Great Idea. Good old quality young adult fiction, footsteps from my front door and free. That's where I am now, second stop of the date.
In addition I got some parenting books. Potty Training for Dummy's, The Happiest Toddler on the Block, and Not Much, Just Chillin'-the hidden lives of middle schoolers (research).
I have an hour left on my date but thought it important to share the frugal joys of the library. It's quiet, they have good books and DVDs. I am sitting next to great choices like the entire first season of Weeds, We are Marshall and Walk the Line (I am by the W's).
I'm also going to return my latest trashy book on CD that I listened to on my long ride to Princeton a couple of weeks ago, One Fifth Avenue.
One more thing about this lovely place called the library: In Bloomfield, we are a part of an inter library system that allows you to order ANYTHING from within the system of 74 other libraries in NJ and it gets delivered here to Bloomfield for me to pick up. Takes 3 days, often less, it's free and it's for me.
